Arlington, Ohio is a community with
a history rich in tradition and achievement.
UA residents enjoy a suburban neighborhood
life, with superior schools, numerous
parks, outstanding libraries, boutique
shopping, and organizations and clubs
devoted to the enrichment of life
in our own town.
Founded
in 1913 by brothers King and Ben Thompson,
Upper Arlington began as 840 acres
of land purchased from James Miller.
At that time, Marble Cliff, located
just south of us, was known as "Arlington,"
so the Thompsons named their new acquisition
"Upper Arlington." UA was
convenient to downtown Columbus, connected
by two streetcar lines, and its location
near the Scioto River made it attractive
to many.
In
1916, Upper Arlington became the training
site for National Guard troops, and
development of the area was temporarily
stopped. By 1918, Upper Arlington
was incorporated as a village, with
a total population of 20 people, under
the leadership of Mayor James Miller.
During
the 1920's, the business district
along Arlington Avenue was developed.
The winding, tree-lined streets and
new homes attracted many more residents,
and by 1939, Upper Arlington was home
to more than 3,000 residents. In 1941,
the village became a city. In 1950,
the population rose to more than 9,000,
and in 2000, the city housed more
than 33,000 people. Through the years,
the city annexed surrounding land,
and Upper Arlington is now comprised
of 9.67 square miles.
Upper
Arlington is now home to generations
of families who live here because
they appreciate the advantages of
an Upper Arlington City Schools education,
the unique sense of community, and
the pride in a home town that welcomes
individual input and group cooperation
to ensure its continual growth and
improvement. The Upper Arlington Women's
Club is one of the groups who works
to this end by enriching the lives
of the youth of Upper Arlington.
